SoFi Technologies (NASDAQ: SOFI) posted another record quarter of financial performance, but investors focused instead on the company’s rapidly expanding consumer lending business and rising operating expenses, sending shares more than 8% lower following its second-quarter earnings release.

The digital financial services company delivered its eighth consecutive quarter of record revenue, exceeded Wall Street’s earnings expectations, and increased its full-year revenue forecast. However, concerns surrounding credit exposure and investment spending overshadowed the strong financial results.

Record Revenue and Profit Growth Continue

SoFi generated net revenue of $1.2 billion during the second quarter while net income climbed 61% year over year to $157 million.

Adjusted earnings reached $0.12 per share, exceeding analysts’ consensus expectation of $0.11.

Chief Executive Officer Anthony Noto described the quarter as exceptional, citing broad-based growth across the company’s lending, financial services, and technology platform businesses.

Management also raised its full-year adjusted revenue guidance to between $4.75 billion and $4.85 billion, reflecting continued confidence in business momentum.

Revenue Outlook Improves While Profit Forecast Remains Unchanged

Despite stronger revenue expectations, SoFi maintained its full-year adjusted earnings guidance at $0.60 per share.

The decision raised questions among investors regarding the company’s expense outlook.

Chief Financial Officer Chris Lapointe explained that management prefers to deploy additional revenue toward expanding the business rather than maximizing near-term profitability.

According to management, numerous attractive growth opportunities currently offer higher long-term returns than simply increasing earnings margins.

Consumer Lending Accelerates

The most closely watched aspect of the earnings report was SoFi’s rapid loan expansion.

Total loan originations surged 69% from a year earlier to $14.8 billion.

Personal loan originations increased 54% to $10.7 billion, while student loan originations nearly tripled to $2.7 billion as demand continued recovering.

Customer deposits also expanded 37% year over year, providing additional funding to support lending growth.

The figures demonstrate SoFi’s continued transformation from a digital banking platform into a large-scale consumer lender.

Investors Focus on Balance Sheet Risk

Although SoFi continues selling portions of newly originated loans through its loan platform business, investors noted that much of the latest lending growth remained on the company’s own balance sheet.

The loan platform, supported by institutional investors including Blue Owl Capital and Fortress Investment Group, funded approximately $3.1 billion of new loans during the quarter, only modestly above the previous quarter’s level.

This suggests SoFi retained a greater share of newly originated loans than in previous periods.

Management defended the strategy, arguing that holding more loans creates predictable future interest income while giving the company greater control over long-term revenue generation.

Credit Performance Remains Stable

Despite rapid lending growth, management reported no significant deterioration in credit quality.

Excluding sales of delinquent loans, SoFi estimated its annualized personal loan charge-off rate declined to 3.7% from 4.4% in the previous quarter.

The improvement indicates that credit performance has remained resilient even as loan volumes accelerated.

Nevertheless, investors remain cautious given the uncertainty surrounding future interest rates and consumer credit conditions.

Rising Expenses Weigh on Sentiment

Another factor contributing to the market’s negative reaction was higher operating costs.

Total noninterest expenses increased by $267 million compared with the prior year, driven largely by a 48% increase in sales and marketing spending.

Management views these investments as necessary to capture long-term market opportunities, but investors questioned whether expense growth could continue outpacing earnings expansion.

Higher Interest Rate Expectations

SoFi also updated its macroeconomic assumptions for the remainder of 2026.

Unlike earlier in the year, when management anticipated two Federal Reserve interest rate cuts, current guidance now assumes one to two 25-basis-point rate increases.

Higher rates generally benefit lending yields but can also increase borrowing costs for consumers and influence credit performance over time.

Outlook

SoFi continues to demonstrate strong operational momentum through record revenue, expanding profitability, robust customer growth, and increasing deposits. However, investors remain focused on whether the company’s increasingly aggressive lending strategy introduces greater balance sheet risk during an uncertain interest rate environment. Going forward, management’s ability to sustain loan growth while maintaining strong credit quality and gradually improving operating leverage will likely remain the primary drivers of investor confidence.
