Key Points
- IMAX reaffirmed its $1.4 billion global box office forecast after the strong debut of The Odyssey.
- Premium-format demand remains robust, with the film generating 20% of worldwide box office from less than 1% of global screens.
- Continued theater expansion and a strong blockbuster release schedule support IMAX's long-term growth outlook.
IMAX is enjoying renewed investor optimism after Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey delivered a blockbuster debut that reinforced expectations for a record-breaking year at the global box office. The entertainment technology company reaffirmed its projection of $1.4 billion in worldwide ticket sales for 2026, easing concerns that recent changes to the theatrical release calendar would weaken its outlook.
The strong performance highlights the continued appeal of premium cinema experiences as major studios increasingly release high-budget films designed specifically for large-format screens.
‘The Odyssey’ Delivers Exceptional IMAX Performance
Universal Pictures’ The Odyssey has become one of IMAX’s strongest-performing releases, generating $52 million globally during its opening weekend. Although IMAX screens account for less than 1% of cinemas worldwide, they contributed approximately 20% of the film’s worldwide debut, demonstrating strong consumer demand for premium viewing experiences.
The opening surpassed the IMAX debut of Nolan’s Academy Award-winning Oppenheimer by roughly 47%, signaling continued momentum for the filmmaker’s large-format releases.
The film also maintained impressive performance beyond opening weekend. According to IMAX management, Monday and Tuesday ticket sales reached record levels for those weekdays, while advance ticket sales for the second weekend remain exceptionally strong.
Upcoming Blockbusters Strengthen Revenue Outlook
Investor confidence has also been supported by a packed release schedule for the remainder of the year. IMAX is expected to benefit from several high-profile theatrical releases across multiple studios, including Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Resident Evil, Digger, Godzilla Minus One, The Adventures of Cliff Booth, Street Fighter, and Dune: Part Three.
The diverse lineup reduces reliance on any single franchise while providing multiple opportunities to generate premium ticket sales throughout the year.
Management believes the strong release calendar will help offset concerns that arose after the postponement of Netflix and Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, which had previously been expected to contribute to IMAX’s 2026 performance.
Global Expansion Continues as Theater Demand Grows
The company’s strong box office momentum is also driving increased demand from exhibitors seeking to install IMAX systems worldwide.
IMAX installed 38 new systems during the second quarter, marking its strongest second-quarter installation pace in a decade. Combined with first-quarter additions, the company remains on track to install between 160 and 175 new systems globally by the end of 2026.
The expansion pipeline remains substantial, with 421 contracted installations awaiting completion, providing long-term visibility into future growth.
As studios continue producing large-scale films optimized for premium formats, IMAX expects both exhibitors and filmmakers to deepen their commitment to the platform. The company also continues investing in technology and innovations designed to enhance the cinematic experience and strengthen partnerships across the entertainment industry.
Looking ahead, IMAX appears well positioned to benefit from a combination of blockbuster film releases, expanding global theater capacity, and sustained consumer demand for premium movie experiences. If upcoming releases perform similarly to The Odyssey, the company could surpass its record box office target while further strengthening its competitive position within the global exhibition industry.
