Intel has taken another step in its effort to reclaim semiconductor manufacturing leadership by deploying ASML’s most advanced High Numerical Aperture Extreme Ultraviolet (High NA EUV) lithography system in chip production. The move represents one of the first commercial uses of the cutting-edge manufacturing technology and could serve as an important validation for ASML as chipmakers evaluate the next generation of semiconductor fabrication equipment. The development also highlights the industry’s ongoing race to produce increasingly powerful processors for artificial intelligence, data centers and advanced computing applications.

Intel Advances Its Manufacturing Strategy

Intel has begun using the High NA EUV system at its Oregon manufacturing facilities as part of its 18A production process, initially applying the technology to selected processors within its Ultra 3 product lineup. The deployment forms part of the company’s broader strategy to restore manufacturing leadership after several years of production delays and increased competition from rival semiconductor manufacturers.

Successful integration of the new lithography platform could improve Intel’s ability to manufacture smaller, more complex chips while enhancing production efficiency. It also supports the company’s long-term objective of expanding its contract manufacturing business and attracting external customers to its semiconductor fabrication network.

ASML’s Technology Receives an Important Validation

ASML remains the world’s only supplier of extreme ultraviolet lithography systems, making its equipment essential for producing the most advanced semiconductors. The company’s High NA EUV platform represents the latest evolution of that technology, enabling chipmakers to create even finer circuit patterns required for next-generation processors.

However, the machines come with an exceptionally high price tag, costing hundreds of millions of dollars per unit. Some leading manufacturers, including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), have indicated they will delay widespread adoption until costs become more favorable. Intel’s early deployment therefore provides ASML with an important commercial endorsement that could encourage broader industry adoption over time.

AI Demand Continues to Drive Semiconductor Innovation

The rollout of High NA EUV technology reflects the growing importance of advanced chip manufacturing as artificial intelligence workloads become increasingly demanding. Semiconductor companies continue investing heavily in new manufacturing capabilities to support next-generation processors used in AI training, cloud computing and high-performance data centers.

Looking ahead, investors will closely monitor Intel’s progress with its 18A manufacturing process, customer adoption of its foundry services and broader acceptance of ASML’s newest lithography systems. While the significant cost of High NA EUV equipment remains a challenge, successful commercial deployment could accelerate industry adoption if the technology delivers meaningful improvements in chip performance, manufacturing efficiency and production yields. As competition intensifies across the semiconductor industry, technological leadership will remain a critical factor shaping both Intel’s turnaround strategy and ASML’s long-term growth prospects.
