The latest authorization allows Novo Nordisk to market oral Wegovy across all European Union member states, adding another major regulatory victory following previous approvals in the United States, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. Regulators also approved a new single-dose pen for the higher 7.2-milligram injectable version of Wegovy, broadening treatment options for patients and healthcare providers.
The approval was supported by data from the OASIS clinical program, where patients receiving the oral therapy alongside lifestyle changes achieved significantly greater average weight loss than those receiving a placebo. The safety profile remained broadly consistent with the injectable version, reinforcing confidence in the treatment’s established clinical characteristics.
Oral Therapies Could Reshape the Obesity Market
The introduction of oral GLP-1 medications is widely viewed as the next major phase in obesity treatment. While injectable therapies have experienced extraordinary commercial success, many patients prefer oral medications because of their convenience and ease of administration. This shift could substantially expand the addressable market by attracting individuals who have been hesitant to begin injectable treatment.
Novo Nordisk has already experienced strong early demand following the U.S. launch of oral Wegovy, with millions of prescriptions generated during the first half of 2026. A significant portion of those prescriptions came from patients who had not previously used GLP-1 therapies, suggesting that oral formulations may broaden patient adoption rather than simply replace existing injectable treatments.
