Blue Origin is accelerating plans to return its New Glenn rocket to flight after a launchpad explosion disrupted testing earlier this year, with Chief Executive Officer Dave Limp confirming the company is adopting a redesigned launch infrastructure instead of rebuilding the damaged launchpad.

The move reflects Blue Origin’s determination to maintain momentum in its competition with SpaceX while minimizing delays to several high-profile government and commercial missions scheduled for the coming years.

According to the company, New Glenn is expected to resume flight operations before the end of 2026.

Company Chooses New Launchpad Design

Rather than reconstructing the original launchpad, Blue Origin will transition to a “horizontal/vertical hybrid” launch configuration that had already been under development for the company’s larger next-generation New Glenn 9×4 variant.

Management believes the redesigned configuration will not only speed the company’s recovery but also improve long-term launch efficiency by supporting a higher flight cadence.

The decision allows Blue Origin to leverage existing infrastructure already under construction while avoiding a lengthy rebuild of the original launch system.

Company executives emphasized that safety and mission reliability remain the highest priorities throughout the redesign process.

Investigation Into Explosion Continues

The launchpad accident occurred during a routine hot-fire test of New Glenn at the company’s Florida launch complex, where the rocket erupted into a large explosion before its planned mission.

Blue Origin continues to investigate the incident to determine its root cause.

Preliminary findings suggest that the anomaly may have originated in the aft section of the rocket’s first stage, although engineers are continuing their technical analysis before final conclusions are reached.

The explosion destroyed several key pieces of launch infrastructure, including the lightning tower, transporter-erector, and hydraulic systems.

Amazon relies on New Glenn to deploy satellites for its Project Kuiper broadband network, while satellite operator AST SpaceMobile and other customers are counting on additional heavy-lift launch capacity as demand for low-Earth orbit satellite deployments continues to grow.

The temporary loss of launch capability comes at a time when global demand for rocket launches continues to outpace available capacity.
