Key Points
- Robinhood is offering everyday investors access to the highly anticipated SpaceX IPO through its IPO Access platform, allowing customers to request shares at the same offering price as institutional investors.
- The SpaceX listing highlights Robinhood's broader strategy to expand retail access to IPOs, private companies, and alternative investment opportunities.
- While the SpaceX IPO could boost user engagement and account growth, Robinhood continues to face challenges from slowing trading activity and weaker cryptocurrency revenue.
Robinhood is giving retail investors a chance to participate in what is expected to be the largest initial public offering in history.
SpaceX plans to go public at an expected offering price of $135 per share, with trading anticipated to begin around June 12. Through Robinhood’s IPO Access feature, eligible customers can submit non-binding requests for shares before the offering is finalized.
Unlike traditional IPOs, where institutional investors typically receive the majority of allocations, Robinhood’s participation gives everyday investors a rare opportunity to purchase shares at the same IPO price offered to large funds and professional investors.
SoFi is also providing similar access to retail participants.
SpaceX Deal Highlights Robinhood’s Long-Term Strategy
The significance of the SpaceX IPO extends beyond the offering itself.
Robinhood has spent years building relationships with companies seeking broader retail participation in public offerings. Chief Executive Officer Vlad Tenev recently noted that founders increasingly approach Robinhood directly, with retail allocations on some recent IPOs reaching between 20% and 30% of total shares offered.
The SpaceX listing represents one of the highest-profile examples of Robinhood’s effort to democratize access to investment opportunities that were historically reserved for institutions and wealthy investors.
Expanding Beyond Traditional Stock Trading
Robinhood has also been expanding access to private markets.
Earlier this year, the company launched Robinhood Ventures Fund I, a vehicle designed to provide customers exposure to late-stage private companies. The fund later added OpenAI to its portfolio.
The company is also developing Robinhood Chain, a blockchain-based initiative aimed at enabling trading of real-world assets through tokenized ownership structures.
Management believes these initiatives can increase customer engagement and encourage users to keep more assets on the platform.
High-profile offerings such as SpaceX have the potential to attract new users while increasing activity among existing customers.
Trading Activity Still Drives Results
Despite expanding product offerings, Robinhood’s financial performance remains heavily tied to trading activity.
First-quarter revenue increased 15% year-over-year to $1.07 billion. However, cryptocurrency revenue declined 47% to $134 million as digital asset trading cooled following the speculative surge seen in late 2025.
Newer business lines helped offset some of that weakness.
Revenue from event contracts surged to $104 million from just $3 million a year earlier, while net interest revenue increased 24% to $359 million.
Even so, earnings per share rose only modestly to $0.38, highlighting the importance of maintaining strong trading volumes across the platform.
Stock Performance Reflects Mixed Investor Sentiment
Robinhood shares have experienced significant volatility.
After gaining more than 200% during 2025, the stock has fallen roughly 22% so far in 2026 and remains well below its October highs.
Despite the decline, Robinhood continues to trade at a premium valuation of roughly 43 times earnings, reflecting investor expectations for continued growth and stronger future engagement.
Some analysts believe the SpaceX IPO could provide a temporary boost to platform activity, though its long-term impact on financial results remains uncertain.
Outlook
Robinhood’s role in the SpaceX IPO reinforces its position as one of the leading platforms seeking to expand retail access to capital markets.
The offering supports the company’s broader strategy of opening participation in IPOs, private investments, and alternative assets to individual investors.
While SpaceX could generate significant customer interest and increase platform engagement, Robinhood’s longer-term success will likely depend on its ability to sustain trading activity, diversify revenue streams, and convert growing customer assets into stronger profitability.
