Wall Street ended Monday modestly lower as investors reassessed the potential economic consequences of continued restrictions around the Strait of Hormuz. The decline came after U.S. equities had reached record levels in the previous session, with renewed uncertainty surrounding a possible U.S.-Iran agreement weighing on sentiment and pushing oil prices sharply higher.

Hormuz Uncertainty Reintroduces an Oil Market Risk

The S&P 500 declined 0.06%, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.32% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.11%. The relatively limited size of the declines indicates that investors have not abandoned the broader equity rally, but the session showed how quickly geopolitical developments can challenge market momentum.

Expectations for an agreement that could facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz had recently helped reduce concerns about disruptions to global energy supplies. Those expectations weakened on Monday after U.S. and Iranian positions remained far apart. President Donald Trump demanded compensation from Iran for people he said had been killed in wars, attacks and protests, while Tehran called for Washington to address demands including compensation for damage caused by U.S. and Israeli strikes.

The uncertainty matters well beyond the Middle East. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical route for global energy shipments, meaning prolonged disruption can influence crude prices, transportation costs and inflation expectations across major economies.

Higher Oil Prices Complicate the Inflation Outlook

Oil prices became a central market variable during Monday’s session as investors reassessed the likelihood of a rapid reopening of the waterway. Higher crude prices can create additional inflationary pressure by raising energy and transportation costs, potentially complicating the Federal Reserve’s efforts to balance price stability against a weakening labor market.

That dynamic is particularly important following the unexpectedly weak U.S. jobs report released last week. The report reduced expectations for a near-term Federal Reserve rate increase, helping fuel Friday’s strong equity-market performance. A sustained increase in energy prices, however, could introduce a conflicting signal for monetary policy if it begins to influence broader inflation expectations.

Markets are therefore entering the week with two competing forces. Weak labor-market data supports a less restrictive policy outlook, while higher energy prices could keep inflation concerns elevated. Wednesday’s U.S. consumer price inflation report is likely to provide an important test of which force is becoming more influential.

Intel Share Sale Adds Pressure to Semiconductor Stocks

Corporate developments also contributed to Monday’s market weakness. Intel fell after announcing plans to raise $15 billion through a share sale, with the proceeds intended to help finance its expansion of chip contract manufacturing and advanced production capabilities.

The announcement comes after a substantial rally in Intel shares as investors have increasingly focused on the company’s turnaround strategy and its ambition to compete more directly with leading contract manufacturers. The equity offering nevertheless introduces potential dilution and highlights the substantial capital requirements involved in rebuilding Intel’s position in the global semiconductor industry.

Weakness in Intel and other chipmakers weighed particularly heavily on the Nasdaq, where technology and semiconductor stocks remain important drivers of index performance. The reaction also comes as investors continue to scrutinize the enormous capital requirements associated with artificial intelligence infrastructure and advanced chip manufacturing.

Looking ahead, the combination of oil prices, developments around the Strait of Hormuz and Wednesday’s U.S. inflation data will be central to the market’s next move. A credible agreement that restores energy flows could ease inflation concerns and support risk appetite, while continued uncertainty could keep crude prices elevated and increase pressure on rate-sensitive equities. Investors will also be watching whether the recent record-setting equity rally can withstand renewed geopolitical and inflation risks without a broader deterioration in market breadth.
