U.S. equity markets ended the final trading session of July on a positive note as investors balanced strong corporate earnings against rising bond yields and renewed uncertainty over monetary policy. The major indexes advanced on Friday, supported by technology strength and a sharp rally in Amazon shares, while investors continued monitoring interest rates, inflation pressures, and global geopolitical developments.

The session highlighted the competing forces shaping financial markets: resilient corporate earnings and artificial intelligence growth on one side, and higher borrowing costs and economic uncertainty on the other. Despite significant volatility throughout the week, major U.S. benchmarks finished July with gains, demonstrating continued investor confidence in large-cap companies.

Amazon’s AI Momentum Drives Technology Sector Recovery

The Nasdaq Composite gained 1% to close at 25,373.85, while the S&P 500 increased 0.7% to finish at 7,489.72. The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 276.97 points, or 0.53%, ending the session at 52,485.03.

A major contributor to market strength was Amazon, which jumped 15% after reporting better-than-expected second-quarter revenue growth. The company’s strong cloud performance reinforced investor confidence that artificial intelligence investments are beginning to generate measurable business results.

The reaction reflected a broader shift in investor sentiment toward AI-focused companies. Following strong results from Microsoft and other technology leaders, markets have increasingly focused on whether large-scale AI infrastructure spending can translate into sustainable revenue growth and improved profitability.

Rising Treasury Yields Create Pressure on Market Valuations

Despite equity gains, bond markets remained a source of concern. The 30-year Treasury yield climbed to its highest level since 2007, reaching approximately 5.25%, while the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield moved above 4.7%, marking its highest level since January 2025.

Higher yields can pressure equity valuations by increasing borrowing costs and reducing the attractiveness of risk assets. Investors continued evaluating Federal Reserve policy expectations after comments from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh highlighted the ongoing challenge of controlling inflation.

Market participants remain focused on whether elevated yields will begin affecting corporate investment, consumer activity, and equity valuations. While earnings remain resilient, sustained increases in borrowing costs could create additional challenges for growth-oriented sectors.

Monthly Gains Continue Despite Volatility and Global Risks

The final week of July demonstrated the market’s ability to recover from sharp swings. Earlier in the week, the Dow experienced a significant decline before rebounding following stronger-than-expected technology earnings. For the full week, the Dow and S&P 500 each gained approximately 1%, while the Nasdaq Composite advanced around 1.6%.

However, July performance remained mixed across indexes. The Dow increased 0.3% for the month, marking its fourth consecutive monthly gain, while the S&P 500 declined 0.1% and the Nasdaq fell 3.2%.

Energy markets also remained a key factor for investors as geopolitical tensions supported higher oil prices. West Texas Intermediate crude rose approximately 1.3% to settle at $84.67 per barrel, while Brent crude increased 1.2% to $90.12 per barrel, raising concerns about potential inflationary effects.

Looking ahead, investors will continue monitoring corporate earnings, Federal Reserve policy signals, Treasury yield movements, and developments in artificial intelligence spending. The ability of major technology companies to demonstrate continued AI-driven revenue growth will remain a central market theme, while higher interest rates and geopolitical risks could continue influencing investor sentiment through the coming months.
