Oracle shares fell to a new 52-week low, highlighting growing investor concerns over the company’s aggressive artificial intelligence infrastructure investments despite continued optimism from Wall Street analysts. The software and cloud computing company has seen its stock decline sharply from earlier highs as markets scrutinize the financial impact of its unprecedented capital spending program.

While Oracle continues to forecast strong revenue growth fueled by demand for AI cloud services, investors are weighing whether the company’s substantial infrastructure investments will translate into sustainable cash flow over the coming years.

AI Expansion Drives Heavy Investment

Oracle has accelerated investment in its cloud infrastructure business to capitalize on surging demand for artificial intelligence computing capacity.

The company expects approximately 34% revenue growth during its current fiscal year, supported by rapidly expanding cloud infrastructure operations. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), which provides computing capacity for AI workloads, recorded 77% annual growth during fiscal 2026, with fourth-quarter revenue increasing 93% year over year.

Management also reported a record $638 billion in remaining performance obligations, representing contracted future revenue that has yet to be recognized. The backlog includes approximately $75 billion tied to large AI-related agreements where customers either prepay for infrastructure or supply their own graphics processing units (GPUs), helping reduce Oracle’s upfront hardware costs.

The expanding backlog has reinforced analyst confidence that Oracle remains well positioned to benefit from long-term enterprise AI adoption.

Cash Burn and Balance Sheet Pressure Weigh on Shares

Despite strong operating performance, investors have become increasingly concerned about the financial cost of Oracle’s rapid expansion.

During fiscal 2026, Oracle invested approximately $55.7 billion in capital expenditures, primarily for new AI data centers and cloud infrastructure. Although operating cash flow reached a record $32 billion, the scale of investment resulted in approximately $23.7 billion of negative free cash flow for the fiscal year.

The aggressive spending has also pressured Oracle’s balance sheet. Credit rating agency S&P Global Ratings recently lowered the company’s credit rating to BBB-, one level above speculative grade, citing elevated capital spending and financing needs.

Oracle has also indicated plans to raise approximately $40 billion through debt and equity financing during the current fiscal year, including a proposed $20 billion share offering that could dilute existing shareholders.

These developments have shifted investor attention from earnings growth toward liquidity, financing requirements, and long-term cash generation.

Analysts Focus on Long-Term Growth Potential

Despite the sharp decline in Oracle’s share price, Wall Street remains broadly optimistic about the company’s outlook.

Analysts continue to point to Oracle’s accelerating cloud growth, expanding AI customer base, and substantial contracted backlog as evidence that current investments could generate significantly higher revenue over time.

The average analyst price target remains around $248 per share, substantially above the stock’s recent trading level.

However, many investors remain cautious until Oracle demonstrates that its large backlog is translating into stronger free cash flow and improved balance sheet metrics. The company’s ability to convert signed AI contracts into profitable revenue while managing capital expenditures will likely determine whether market sentiment improves.

Looking ahead, Oracle’s upcoming quarterly results will be closely watched for evidence that cloud revenue growth continues accelerating while capital spending begins moderating. Investors will also monitor free cash flow trends, financing requirements, and progress converting its record AI contract backlog into recognized revenue as key indicators of whether the company’s long-term growth strategy is delivering sustainable financial returns.
