Micron Technology is expanding its semiconductor manufacturing footprint in Taiwan as demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure continues to accelerate worldwide. The U.S. memory chipmaker announced plans to construct a second fabrication facility at the Tongluo site it recently acquired from Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. The expansion highlights the intensifying race among semiconductor companies to increase production capacity for advanced memory technologies, particularly high-bandwidth memory (HBM), which has become a critical component in powering AI systems and large-scale data centers.

Expansion of Micron’s Taiwan Manufacturing Base

Micron confirmed that it has completed the acquisition of the Tongluo P5 facility from Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp., located in Taiwan’s Miaoli County. The company plans to build a second fabrication plant at the same site, expanding its local manufacturing capabilities.

According to Micron, the new facility will be comparable in scale to its existing fabrication plant in the region. Construction is expected to begin by the end of the company’s fiscal 2026, marking another major investment in semiconductor production as global demand for advanced memory solutions continues to grow.

Meeting Surging Demand for AI Memory Chips

The expansion is closely tied to the rapid growth of artificial intelligence applications, which require vast amounts of memory to process large datasets and run complex models. Micron said the new facility will help increase the production of advanced DRAM products, including high-bandwidth memory used in AI accelerators and high-performance computing systems.

HBM has emerged as one of the most critical components in the AI hardware ecosystem, enabling faster data transfer between processors and memory systems. As technology companies scale up AI workloads across cloud infrastructure and enterprise environments, demand for these specialized memory chips has surged significantly.

Taiwan’s Strategic Role in the Semiconductor Supply Chain

Taiwan remains one of the most important hubs in the global semiconductor supply chain, hosting some of the world’s most advanced chip manufacturing facilities. Micron’s continued investment in the region reflects both the technical expertise available in Taiwan and the country’s central role in producing high-performance semiconductors.

By expanding its operations at the Tongluo site, Micron aims to strengthen its presence in Asia’s semiconductor ecosystem while supporting growing demand from global technology companies developing AI-driven services.

Looking Ahead: The AI Memory Race

The planned facility underscores the broader competition among semiconductor manufacturers to secure leadership in AI-related hardware. As artificial intelligence workloads become more complex and data-intensive, advanced memory technologies such as HBM are expected to play an increasingly critical role in enabling next-generation computing systems.

For Micron, expanding DRAM production capacity in Taiwan positions the company to capture a larger share of the rapidly expanding AI infrastructure market. The success of this strategy will depend on how quickly the company can bring new capacity online and meet the growing demand from cloud providers, chip designers, and AI developers worldwide.
