Key Points

  • Palantir shares have gained 33% over the past month as investors respond to strong growth across government and commercial AI markets.
  • U.S. government revenue surged 90% year over year to $809 million, while U.S. commercial revenue increased 149% to $764 million, showing that both sides of the business are expanding rapidly.
  • Palantir's long-term opportunity remains significant, but its elevated valuation means continued growth, contract expansion and exceptionally strong profitability will be essential to support the stock's recent momentum.

Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR) has regained investor attention after a powerful 33% rally over the past month, supported by accelerating artificial intelligence demand and another strong earnings performance. The company’s exposure to government-led AI initiatives and rapidly expanding commercial business gives it a compelling long-term growth narrative. Yet after such a sharp move, the central question for investors is no longer whether Palantir is growing, but whether its growth is strong enough to justify an elevated valuation.

AI Sovereignty Creates a Powerful Demand Tailwind

One of Palantir’s most distinctive opportunities is the growing push for AI sovereignty. Governments increasingly want control over their artificial intelligence infrastructure, data and decision-making systems rather than relying entirely on foreign technology providers. Palantir CEO Alex Karp has described this demand as having been “unleashed,” pointing to a potentially significant expansion of the company’s government opportunity.

The U.S. government remains Palantir’s largest customer. Government revenue reached $809 million in the second quarter, representing a 90% year-over-year increase and an 18% sequential gain. It accounted for more than 40% of total revenue, demonstrating how closely Palantir’s financial performance remains linked to rising government investment in AI capabilities.

The broader sovereign AI market is projected to expand rapidly through 2033. If governments continue increasing spending on domestic intelligence capabilities, Palantir’s established position could provide a significant structural advantage, particularly as national security becomes increasingly intertwined with advanced AI systems.

Commercial Growth Is Becoming Equally Important

Palantir’s investment case is becoming broader because its commercial business is expanding even faster than its government operations. U.S. commercial revenue increased 149% year over year to $764 million, narrowing the gap with government revenue. Sequential growth of 28% suggests that enterprise adoption is accelerating rather than simply benefiting from a favorable comparison.

The growth is also translating into exceptional profitability. Net income more than tripled year over year to $1.1 billion, producing a net profit margin above 50%. Meanwhile, guidance points to continued momentum, with the midpoint of projected revenue at $2.162 billion, representing a 12% increase from the preceding quarter.

Palantir is also building future revenue visibility through increasingly large contracts. The company closed $2.13 billion in U.S. commercial deals during the quarter, although that figure does not represent revenue recognized immediately. Instead, these multiyear agreements provide a pipeline that could support future growth if customers continue expanding their use of Palantir’s platforms.

Growth Is Strong, but Valuation Remains the Key Risk

The strongest argument against Palantir is not its operating performance. It is the expectations embedded in the stock price. A company growing at this pace can justify a premium valuation, but the market’s tolerance for disappointment becomes lower as expectations rise. Even small signs of slower commercial adoption, weaker government spending or declining growth rates could produce significant volatility.

That creates an important distinction for investors. Palantir’s position at the intersection of government AI, enterprise software and sovereign technology could support substantial expansion over a five- to 10-year period. However, the recent 33% rally means investors should distinguish between the strength of the business and the price being paid for that strength.

Going forward, the most important indicators will be commercial revenue growth, government contract expansion, large-deal conversion and profitability. If Palantir can sustain rapid growth across both government and enterprise markets while maintaining its exceptional margins, the current premium could remain defensible. If growth begins to normalize more quickly than expected, however, valuation could become a significant source of downside risk. For investors in the U.S. and Israel watching the AI sector, Palantir remains one of the clearest examples of how strategic AI demand can create extraordinary growth while simultaneously raising the importance of disciplined valuation analysis.
