Coherent is entering fiscal 2027 with strong momentum as accelerating artificial intelligence infrastructure investment continues to boost demand for its optical and photonics products. The company exceeded Wall Street expectations for its fourth quarter and issued first-quarter revenue and earnings guidance above consensus estimates. However, the initial market reaction was cautious, with shares falling about 4% in extended trading despite gaining nearly 93% since the start of the year.

Data Center Demand Powers Fourth-Quarter Results

Coherent’s fourth-quarter performance was driven primarily by its data center and communications business, which remains its largest segment and a major beneficiary of the AI infrastructure buildout. Revenue from the segment reached $1.62 billion for the quarter ended June 30, compared with $1.02 billion a year earlier, representing growth of roughly 59%.

Overall quarterly revenue came in at $2.05 billion, exceeding the $1.99 billion average analyst estimate compiled by LSEG. Adjusted earnings were $1.74 per share, ahead of the $1.61 consensus expectation. The results reinforce the importance of rising data center investment for Coherent’s growth profile as hyperscalers and technology companies continue expanding computing capacity.

The company’s photonics products, including optical transceivers, play a critical role in moving data within increasingly complex data center networks. As AI workloads require greater computing density and faster communication between systems, demand for high-performance optical infrastructure has become an increasingly important part of the broader AI investment cycle.

Industrial Weakness Creates a More Uneven Growth Picture

Despite the strength of its core AI-related business, Coherent’s results were not uniformly positive. Revenue from its industrial segment declined 16% during the quarter, highlighting the company’s exposure to markets outside the rapidly expanding data center ecosystem.

The company also reported sharply lower full-year operating cash flow, creating an important consideration for investors evaluating the sustainability of its current growth trajectory. Strong revenue expansion from data centers can support the broader business, but continued weakness in industrial markets could limit the extent to which AI-driven growth translates into balanced companywide performance.

The contrast between the two businesses also helps explain why investors reacted cautiously to an otherwise strong earnings report. Coherent’s future performance is becoming increasingly tied to the pace and durability of AI infrastructure spending.

Fiscal 2027 Guidance Raises the Bar

Management is nevertheless entering the new fiscal year with considerable confidence. CEO Jim Anderson said the company is seeing exceptional customer demand, expanding production capacity and multiple new growth platforms beginning to ramp.

For the first quarter, Coherent expects revenue between $2.2 billion and $2.4 billion, comfortably above Wall Street’s $2.14 billion estimate. Adjusted earnings are forecast at $1.85 to $2.05 per share, compared with the $1.77 analyst consensus.

That outlook suggests management expects AI-related demand to remain strong rather than represent a temporary surge. Coherent’s strategic relationship with Nvidia also adds significance to the expansion. Nvidia announced a $2 billion investment in Coherent in March to support research and development, manufacturing capacity and operations, strengthening the connection between the two companies as AI infrastructure expands.

Market Outlook

Coherent’s near-term outlook increasingly depends on whether AI demand can offset weakness in its industrial business and sustain the rapid expansion of its data center segment. The company’s above-consensus guidance indicates that management expects strong momentum to continue into fiscal 2027, but the nearly 93% gain in the stock this year means expectations are already elevated.

Investors will likely focus on whether production capacity can expand fast enough to meet customer demand, whether new growth platforms contribute meaningfully and whether operating cash flow improves. If AI infrastructure spending remains robust, Coherent could continue benefiting from the expansion of high-speed data center networks. However, any slowdown in hyperscaler investment or continued weakness outside data centers could make the stock’s elevated expectations more difficult to sustain.
