Key Points
- Box reported record second-quarter revenue of $321.1 million, up 9% year over year and 11% on a constant-currency basis.
- Billings increased 17% to $309.5 million, while remaining performance obligations reached $1.7 billion, indicating stronger forward demand for the company's enterprise content platform.
- Enterprise Advanced and AI-related adoption are becoming increasingly important growth drivers, while operating cash flow and free cash flow rose sharply during the quarter.
Revenue Growth Accelerates Through Enterprise Demand
Box delivered a stronger-than-expected second quarter for fiscal 2027, with revenue reaching a record $321.1 million. The 9% reported increase translates to 11% growth on a constant-currency basis, demonstrating that foreign-exchange pressure is masking part of the underlying expansion in the business.
More importantly, billings rose 17% to $309.5 million, substantially ahead of reported revenue growth. That divergence suggests enterprise customers are committing to additional capacity and services at a faster rate than revenue is currently being recognized. Remaining performance obligations also increased 15% to $1.7 billion, or 17% on a constant-currency basis.
The improvement in net retention to 106% provides another indication that existing customers are expanding their relationship with Box rather than simply maintaining subscriptions. Enterprise Advanced was identified by management as a major contributor, with constant-currency revenue growth from the product accelerating for a fifth consecutive quarter.
AI Positioning Is Becoming Central to the Investment Case
Box is increasingly positioning its platform around the infrastructure required to make enterprise AI useful while maintaining control over sensitive corporate information. The company argues that AI agents require secure, governed access to unstructured content, creating an opportunity for Box to function as a model-neutral layer between enterprise data and multiple AI systems.
During the quarter, Box introduced additional controls for AI agents, including guardrails, activity monitoring, prompt-injection detection and classification-based access policies. It also expanded integrations across leading AI platforms and enterprise applications. The strategy is significant because enterprises may increasingly need governance infrastructure as AI moves from experimentation toward operational deployment.
The expansion of Box Zones into Switzerland, Israel and Singapore further strengthens the company’s ability to address data-governance requirements across international markets. With approximately 35% of revenue generated outside the United States, geographic infrastructure remains strategically important, although currency movements continue to create a measurable financial headwind.
Margins and Cash Flow Strengthen the Financial Profile
Profitability also improved during the quarter. GAAP operating income rose to $32.6 million from $20.6 million a year earlier, lifting the operating margin to 10.2% from 7.0%. Non-GAAP operating income reached $94.5 million, representing a 29.4% margin compared with 28.6% previously.
Cash generation was even more notable. Operating cash flow increased 54% to $70.8 million, while non-GAAP free cash flow jumped 67% to $59.7 million. Box also repurchased 2.6 million shares for approximately $66 million during the quarter, with about $378 million of remaining authorization.
For the third quarter, management expects revenue of approximately $329 million, representing 9% reported growth and 11% constant-currency growth. Full-year fiscal 2027 revenue guidance stands at approximately $1.29 billion, with non-GAAP operating margin expected at 28%.
Outlook
The next phase of Box’s growth will depend on whether AI adoption can continue converting into higher enterprise spending and stronger retention. At the same time, investors will need to distinguish durable demand from the broader enthusiasm surrounding corporate AI investment. For now, accelerating billings, expanding profitability and stronger cash generation provide evidence that Box is translating its AI strategy into measurable financial momentum.
