Apple continued its March hardware rollout with the launch of upgraded MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models featuring its next-generation M5 silicon family, signaling a renewed emphasis on performance computing and artificial intelligence workloads.

The updated MacBook Air now starts at $1,099, marking a $100 increase over last year’s model, while doubling base storage to 512GB. Meanwhile, the redesigned MacBook Pro lineup integrates the more powerful M5 Pro and M5 Max processors, targeting professional users seeking high-performance AI and rendering capabilities.

The launches arrive as the broader PC market faces contraction, forcing Apple to balance pricing discipline with technological differentiation.

M5 Chips Push AI and Graphics Performance

The standard M5 chip powers the new MacBook Air in both 13-inch and 15-inch variants, offering improved wireless connectivity through Apple’s N1 chip and maintaining 18-hour battery life. Memory now begins at 16GB, upgradeable to 32GB, reinforcing the Air’s positioning as a capable productivity machine rather than a basic entry-level device.

For professional users, the M5 Pro and M5 Max represent a more substantial leap. The M5 Pro features a 20-core GPU optimized for 3D animation and gaming workloads, while the M5 Max doubles that to 40 cores, designed for advanced rendering and AI-intensive tasks.

Apple claims the M5 Pro delivers up to 6.9 times faster large language model prompt processing than the M1 Pro, while the M5 Max enables AI image generation speeds up to eight times faster than its M1 Max predecessor. Rendering performance is also notably improved, with gains exceeding fivefold compared to earlier-generation chips.

Premium Pricing Meets Storage Expansion

The MacBook Pro 14-inch with a standard M5 chip begins at $1,699, up from $1,599 last year. Stepping up to the M5 Pro raises the entry price to $2,199, while the M5 Max configuration starts at $3,599. A fully configured 16-inch MacBook Pro can exceed $7,000, placing it squarely in workstation territory.

Base storage upgrades accompany the higher prices. The M5 Pro models now begin at 1TB, doubling the previous baseline, while M5 Max configurations start at 2TB. These enhancements reflect Apple’s strategy of bundling hardware upgrades with price increases to protect margins.

Macro Headwinds and Strategic Context

Apple’s Mac segment generated $33.7 billion in revenue in 2025, up from roughly $30 billion the prior year, making it the company’s fourth-largest business behind the iPhone, services, and wearables.

However, the broader PC market faces structural challenges. According to industry projections, global PC shipments may decline more than 11% in 2026, though revenue could rise modestly due to higher average selling prices.
