Amazon is expanding its presence in healthcare technology with the launch of a new artificial intelligence platform designed to automate administrative tasks and improve patient access to care.

The company’s cloud computing division, Amazon Web Services, announced the launch of Amazon Connect Health, an AI-driven platform aimed at helping healthcare providers manage routine tasks such as patient verification, appointment scheduling, medical documentation, and billing processes.

AI Designed to Reduce Administrative Burden

The new platform uses agentic artificial intelligence to automate workflows typically handled by administrative staff in hospitals and clinics. Amazon Connect Health integrates directly with electronic health record systems used by clinicians, allowing the system to assist with compiling medical histories, generating clinical documentation, and assigning medical billing codes.

The AI platform operates around the clock, enabling healthcare providers to schedule appointments instantly while escalating complex cases to human staff when needed.

Real-Time Clinical Support for Doctors

The system is also designed to assist clinicians during patient visits. It can transcribe conversations between doctors and patients, generate draft clinical notes for review in real time, and produce simplified summaries of medical visits that are easier for patients to understand.

Amazon says the platform uses healthcare-specific training data and guidelines to ensure accuracy, while also incorporating multiple evaluation layers to monitor performance and safety.

Early Adoption Shows Efficiency Gains

One early adopter, UC San Diego Health, reported improvements in efficiency after implementing the technology. According to Amazon, the health system has reduced call abandonment rates by up to 60% and saved roughly one minute per patient call.

The platform also includes an “evidence mapping” feature that links AI-generated outputs directly to their source data, such as medical records or call transcripts, helping ensure transparency and traceability.

Amazon’s healthcare provider Amazon One Medical has already used the platform’s documentation features during more than one million patient visits, with clinicians reportedly adopting the system widely in weekly workflows.
