Key Points
- Amazon reported second-quarter revenue of $200.6 billion, surpassing Wall Street expectations as AWS delivered its fastest growth in more than four years.
- AWS revenue climbed 37% year over year to $42.2 billion, while operating income and margins exceeded analyst estimates.
- Despite strong quarterly performance, Amazon's third-quarter revenue guidance came in below consensus, highlighting continued investment and macroeconomic uncertainty.
Amazon.com Inc. delivered stronger-than-expected second-quarter 2026 financial results, driven by accelerating cloud computing demand, expanding artificial intelligence investments, and resilient consumer spending. The company’s results reinforced Amazon’s position as one of the primary beneficiaries of the global AI infrastructure cycle, although investors also focused on softer-than-expected third-quarter guidance.
The earnings release arrives as hyperscale cloud providers continue increasing capital expenditures to support generative AI workloads. Amazon’s performance demonstrates that demand for cloud infrastructure, AI services, and digital advertising remains robust despite an increasingly competitive technology landscape.
AWS Continues to Lead Amazon’s Growth Story
Amazon reported second-quarter revenue of $200.6 billion, exceeding analyst expectations of $196.4 billion and representing approximately 20% year-over-year growth. Earnings per share reached $5.75, although the company noted that results included a significant non-operating gain associated primarily with its investment in Anthropic.
The standout performer remained Amazon Web Services (AWS), which generated $42.2 billion in revenue, ahead of the consensus estimate of $40.5 billion. AWS revenue increased approximately 37% from the prior year, marking its strongest growth rate in roughly 18 quarters as enterprise customers continued expanding AI-related cloud spending.
Management also disclosed that both its AI business and custom chip operations have each surpassed an annual revenue run rate of more than $25 billion, highlighting the rapidly expanding commercial opportunity surrounding artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Profitability Improves Across Core Business Segments
Amazon’s operating performance strengthened significantly during the quarter. Operating income reached $27.5 billion, comfortably exceeding analyst expectations of $23.53 billion, while AWS operating margins expanded to 39.4%, outperforming estimates of approximately 33.8%.
The company’s North American retail business generated $116.2 billion in revenue, ahead of expectations, while international operations produced $42.2 billion. Advertising continued to serve as another important growth driver, with management noting approximately 26% year-over-year growth in advertising revenue during the quarter.
One area that remained under pressure was free cash flow, which measured approximately negative $7.6 billion on a trailing twelve-month basis, below analyst expectations. Elevated capital expenditures tied to AI infrastructure, data center expansion, and technology investments continue weighing on near-term cash generation while supporting future growth initiatives.
Forward Guidance Reflects Continued Investment Cycle
For the third quarter, Amazon projected revenue between $197 billion and $202 billion, below the analyst consensus estimate of approximately $204 billion. Operating income guidance of $22.5 billion to $26.5 billion brackets market expectations, indicating management remains cautious as it balances aggressive AI investment with evolving macroeconomic conditions.
Executives emphasized that AWS continues experiencing exceptional demand from customers deploying artificial intelligence applications and highlighted sustained momentum in Amazon’s semiconductor initiatives. These investments are expected to remain central to Amazon’s long-term strategy as enterprises increasingly migrate AI workloads to cloud infrastructure.
Looking ahead, investors will closely monitor whether AWS can sustain its accelerated growth trajectory, how rapidly Amazon converts AI infrastructure spending into recurring revenue, and whether expanding cloud margins can offset elevated capital expenditures. While softer near-term guidance may temper expectations, Amazon’s latest results reinforce its strategic position at the center of the global artificial intelligence ecosystem, with cloud computing, advertising, and AI services expected to remain key long-term growth engines.
