Rivian has unveiled pricing and trim details for its upcoming R2 midsize electric SUV, positioning the vehicle as a potential challenger to Tesla’s best-selling Model Y. The company hopes the R2 will expand its customer base by offering a more affordable entry into Rivian’s adventure-focused electric vehicle lineup. However, while the most affordable version is expected to start around $45,000, that base model will not reach customers until late 2027. The long wait highlights both Rivian’s ambitious growth plans and the competitive pressure facing new EV models in an increasingly crowded electric vehicle market.

R2 Pricing Targets the Mass-Market EV Segment

Rivian revealed that the R2 lineup will begin with higher-end versions before the lower-cost variants become available. The top-tier R2 Performance trim with the Launch Package will start at $57,990 and feature a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing 656 horsepower. This configuration allows the SUV to accelerate from zero to sixty miles per hour in just 3.6 seconds, placing it among the faster vehicles in the midsize electric SUV segment. The Performance model is expected to deliver an estimated driving range of approximately 330 miles, while also including premium interior materials and enhanced driver-assistance features.

Midrange Trim Arrives Before the Budget Version

The R2 Premium variant is scheduled to launch in late 2026 with a starting price of $53,990. This version will also feature a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup but with slightly lower performance metrics, including 450 horsepower and a 0–60 mph time of around 4.6 seconds. Despite the reduced power, Rivian estimates the Premium model will match the Performance trim’s 330-mile range. The company plans to introduce the Standard trim later, beginning with a $48,490 version in early 2027 featuring a single rear-mounted motor and an estimated range of up to 345 miles.

Entry-Level Model Targets Wider Consumer Adoption

The most affordable R2 variant, expected to start near $45,000, will arrive later in 2027 and is likely to feature a smaller battery pack delivering more than 265 miles of driving range. Rivian hopes this version will significantly broaden the vehicle’s appeal among mainstream EV buyers. However, the delayed timeline means the company will initially compete with Tesla’s Model Y, which currently starts at approximately $39,990 in the United States. While Rivian’s vehicle emphasizes rugged design and outdoor-focused features, the pricing difference could influence purchasing decisions in the highly competitive electric SUV segment.

Market Outlook

Rivian’s R2 launch strategy highlights the broader transition underway in the electric vehicle industry as manufacturers attempt to balance innovation with affordability. If the company successfully delivers the R2 at scale, it could help Rivian compete more directly with established EV leaders while expanding its brand beyond premium early adopters. However, the extended timeline for the entry-level model gives competitors time to introduce new vehicles in the same price range. Investors and consumers will be watching closely to see whether Rivian can maintain demand, control manufacturing costs, and deliver the R2 on schedule in an increasingly competitive global EV market.
