Digital services across the United Arab Emirates were disrupted after drone strikes damaged Amazon Web Services infrastructure, highlighting how geopolitical conflict is now directly impacting cloud-dependent financial systems.

Amazon Web Services confirmed that two of its data centers in the UAE were directly struck, while a nearby facility in Bahrain also suffered damage. The incidents forced multiple facilities offline, triggering cascading outages across banking, payments, and enterprise software platforms.

Banking and Payments Hit

Several major UAE financial institutions reported service interruptions. Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank said its mobile banking app and contact center services were temporarily unavailable. Emirates NBD also confirmed disruptions to its phone banking systems.

Fintech and payments platforms were similarly affected. Alaan and Hubpay reported app access issues linked to AWS infrastructure outages.

Enterprise software provider Snowflake flagged elevated connectivity errors tied to the regional cloud disruption, while investing app Sarwa experienced temporary service instability before restoring core operations.

Consumer-facing platforms were also caught in the disruption. Delivery and ride-hailing app Careem reported outages before later confirming that services had returned to normal.

‘Sparks and Fire’ at Data Centers

AWS stated that “objects” struck one of its facilities, causing sparks and fire. The company reported structural damage, power delivery disruption, and additional impact from fire suppression systems that resulted in water damage.

Two of the three regional data center hubs remain significantly impaired, according to AWS status updates. The company has warned that recovery may be prolonged due to the physical nature of the damage.

AWS is strongly recommending that customers with workloads in the Middle East migrate to alternative AWS regions to mitigate operational risk.

Systemic Risk in a Cloud-Dependent Economy

The incident underscores the increasing vulnerability of modern financial systems to infrastructure disruptions. Banks, fintechs, and digital platforms rely heavily on centralized cloud infrastructure. When that infrastructure is compromised, outages can quickly cascade across multiple sectors.

The disruption comes amid broader geopolitical escalation, including attacks on oil and gas facilities and shipping infrastructure. The reported closure of the Strait of Hormuz has already sent shockwaves through global energy markets, with oil prices surging and equities retreating.

While UAE operators are working to restore services, the episode highlights a new layer of systemic risk: critical cloud infrastructure as a geopolitical target.
