AI Expectations Overshadow an Earnings Beat

Marvell Technology shares suffered a sharp 10% decline to $217.54 Friday, despite the chipmaker delivering quarterly results and forward guidance above Wall Street expectations. The reaction highlights the difficulty facing high-growth semiconductor companies when investor expectations have already moved significantly ahead of reported fundamentals. Marvell has benefited from accelerating data-center investment, custom AI chips, networking and optical connectivity, but the latest selloff suggests investors are demanding clearer evidence that AI-related growth can justify the stock’s elevated valuation.

For fiscal third-quarter results, Marvell projected revenue of $3.15 billion at the midpoint, with adjusted earnings of $1.10 per share. Both figures exceeded consensus expectations of $3.04 billion and $1.08, respectively. Yet the stronger outlook was insufficient to offset concerns that the company must deliver increasingly substantial AI growth following its strong 2026 share-price performance.

$211 Becomes the Critical Technical Level

The selloff has materially weakened Marvell’s short-term technical structure. Shares fell below the five-day moving average of $235.66, the 20-day average of $224.44 and the 50-day average of $228.67. The stock is now approaching its 100-day moving average at $211.34, placing that level at the center of the immediate technical debate.

A decisive break below $211 could indicate that selling pressure is extending beyond a routine post-earnings adjustment and potentially open the door to a deeper retracement. At the same time, the RSI reading of 49.83 does not indicate an oversold market. That distinction matters because it suggests the decline has not yet produced the type of extreme momentum conditions that might naturally attract aggressive dip buyers.

A recovery above the $224-$229 area would begin repairing the near-term setup, while a move back toward approximately $236 would provide stronger evidence that buyers are regaining control.

Google Relationship Raises the Stakes

The fundamental question centers increasingly on Marvell’s expanded relationship with Google and the expected contribution from custom computing. The company’s exposure to major cloud providers has positioned it as an important participant in the infrastructure buildout supporting artificial intelligence, but that opportunity has also raised the bar for execution.

Goldman Sachs highlighted elevated expectations heading into the earnings release, partly because of customer spending and enthusiasm surrounding the Google relationship. The market’s reaction indicates that investors may now require greater visibility into the timing and scale of those deployments rather than simply confirmation that demand exists.

The next phase for Marvell will therefore be defined by execution against unusually high expectations. Investors will be watching the $211 support area alongside evidence of accelerating AI revenue, particularly from major customers. If Marvell can demonstrate stronger visibility into Google-related revenue and its broader custom-compute ramp, the recent decline could prove to be an expectations reset. If that evidence remains limited, technical weakness could persist even with quarterly results that continue to beat consensus.
