Key Points
- Bank of America (BofA) expects a standard 3%-4% sales beat in Q2, but flags the disclosure of off-balance-sheet commitments as the critical catalyst for market pricing.
- Nvidia's EV/EBITDA multiple has compressed by 44% to ~15x—less than half of rival AMD's (~32x)—reflecting an exaggerated fear over funding exposures.
- Projections of generating nearly $1 billion daily in free cash flow next year give the company immense flexibility to boost share buybacks, akin to Apple's historical pivot.
The tech mega-cap earnings season is reaching its climax as Wall Street’s eyes turn to the leader of the artificial intelligence revolution, Nvidia ($NVDA). While most investors are hyper-focused on immediate revenue and profit lines, a new analysis by Bank of America paints a deeper and more complex picture. According to the bank’s analysts, while the company is expected to deliver a customary 3% to 4% revenue beat for the fiscal second quarter driven by the Vera Rubin ramp, the headline is the least interesting part. What truly matters for the stock’s future lies in potential disclosures regarding its multi-year, off-balance-sheet commitments to lock down supply, power, models, and demand. Quantifying these liabilities, although not entirely erasing AI buildout risk, will allow the market to properly price what is currently viewed as a severely depressed valuation.
Multiple Compression and the Gap with Competitors
Nvidia’s financial history over the past year highlights a dramatic shift in market sentiment. Following its first mega-deal—the $100 billion/10GW OpenAI investment in September 2025—the stock traded near its 5-year historical forward EV/EBITDA median of ~27x. Since then, the multiple has collapsed by 44% to just ~15x. This disequilibrium is particularly striking when compared to its direct rival AMD, which trades at a multiple of ~32x—more than double that of Nvidia. Bank of America estimates that this “haircut” overstates the worst-case funding burden, which is capped at roughly $500 billion (about 10% of enterprise value). In reality, the bank’s estimates point to multi-year purchase commitments and cloud service agreements requiring only $150 to $200 billion. Furthermore, in a bull case of resilient demand, Nvidia may never have to shoulder the costs of unused capacity or stranded assets at all.
The iPhone Analogy and the Window for Enhanced Capital Returns
Nvidia has previously dubbed the dawn of AI as the tech industry’s “iPhone moment,” and Bank of America believes it is time to finish the analogy on cash returns. Between fiscal years 2013 and 2025, Apple returned 82% of its free cash flow (FCF) to investors, retiring approximately 43% of its shares. That 2013 buyback pivot put a solid floor under the stock and lifted its EV/EBITDA multiple from 4x to 25x currently. Despite differences in economic cycles, lower capital expenditures (CapEx), and recurring software services, Nvidia’s projected ~37% FCF payout (based on FY27/28 consensus) appears notably modest. A strategic move to a 50% to 75% payout range could offer substantial fundamental support for the stock price.
Cash Flow Power and Looking Ahead
The financial foundation enabling such a strategic shift lies in the company’s sheer cash generation velocity. According to the bank’s projections, by next year, Nvidia could be generating nearly $1 billion daily in free cash flow. Available liquidity on this scale provides management with massive firepower, allowing it to simultaneously support its ecosystem commitments and dedicate a meaningful amount toward stock buybacks to support the share price.
In the coming weeks, Nvidia’s ultimate test on Wall Street will not merely be measured by its ability to deliver another quarter of impressive top-line growth, but by management’s willingness to provide full transparency regarding its liability structure and cash return strategy. If the company chooses to adopt a proactive buyback policy while clearly framing the risks, the market may view this as the exact catalyst the bullish thesis has been waiting for—a move that could lead to a recalibration of multiples and definitively close the valuation gap with the broader technology sector.
