Key Points

  • AWS reported a $496 billion backlog in the second quarter, highlighting substantial contracted demand for Amazon’s cloud computing services.
  • AWS generated 60% of Amazon’s operating income while accounting for only 21% of sales, reinforcing its importance as the company’s primary profit engine.
  • Amazon expects capacity constraints to continue through 2026 and 2027, while emerging 2028 demand suggests that the AI-driven cloud expansion could support a multi-year growth cycle.

Amazon’s cloud business is entering a new phase of expansion as Amazon Web Services (AWS) reported a massive $496 billion backlog in the second quarter. The figure underscores the extraordinary demand for cloud computing capacity as companies accelerate artificial intelligence infrastructure spending. With Amazon shares trading below $270 in the source material, investors are weighing whether AWS’s contracted business, profitability and aggressive data-center investment provide enough visibility to justify a bullish view on the stock.

AWS Has Become Amazon’s Primary Profit Engine

Amazon’s retail operations remain the company’s most recognizable business, but AWS has become considerably more important to its profitability. During the second quarter, AWS generated approximately 60% of Amazon’s operating income while accounting for only 21% of total sales. That disparity highlights the substantially higher profitability of cloud computing compared with Amazon’s commerce operations.

Amazon is reinforcing that importance through aggressive capital investment. The company plans to spend approximately $220 billion on capital expenditures this year, with nearly all of that spending directed toward data-center infrastructure. The strategy reflects a simple economic reality: demand for computing capacity, particularly from AI workloads, is expanding faster than Amazon can currently build capacity.

The $496 Billion Backlog Signals Multi-Year Demand

AWS’s backlog provides investors with an unusually strong indication of future demand. At the company’s reported quarterly AWS revenue run rate of approximately $42.2 billion, processing $496 billion of backlog at that pace would theoretically require nearly three years. While backlog does not translate directly into immediate revenue, its scale demonstrates how much contracted demand AWS has accumulated.

More importantly, Amazon’s management indicated that capacity constraints are expected to persist. CEO Andy Jassy said the company would not be able to satisfy all demand in 2026 and expects similar limitations in 2027. Demand extending into 2028 is already becoming visible, suggesting that the current AI infrastructure cycle could represent a multi-year opportunity rather than a temporary surge.

Why Amazon Could Still Have Upside

The central investment argument is that Amazon is operating with a favorable problem: demand is arriving faster than the company can supply computing capacity. Continued investment in data centers should allow AWS to convert more of that demand into revenue while strengthening Amazon’s position in the increasingly competitive cloud market.

For investors, the key risk is that the enormous capital spending required to capture this opportunity could pressure near-term cash flow and returns on invested capital. Nevertheless, if AWS continues converting its backlog into higher revenue and operating income, the investment cycle could ultimately strengthen Amazon’s earnings power.

At the valuation cited in the source material, the stock appears attractive to investors willing to look beyond near-term infrastructure spending. The combination of a $496 billion backlog, persistent AI-driven demand and AWS’s disproportionate contribution to operating income provides a strong foundation for continued growth. Going forward, investors should focus on AWS revenue growth, backlog conversion, data-center capacity and the returns generated from Amazon’s enormous capital expenditures. If demand remains ahead of supply through 2027 and into 2028, AWS could become an even more powerful driver of Amazon’s long-term valuation.
