Key Points
- South Korea led the regional rebound with a 5.89% gain, recovering sharply after Wednesday's steep selloff.
- Japan advanced 1.36%, while India, Hong Kong, Australia, and mainland China also finished higher, putting every major Asian equity benchmark in positive territory.
- The broad-based recovery was accompanied by stronger regional currencies, with the Japanese Yen Index gaining 0.96% and the Australian Dollar Index rising 0.58%.
Asian markets closed broadly higher on August 20, 2026, as investors returned to risk assets following Wednesday’s sharp regional selloff. South Korea led the recovery with a powerful advance, while Japan, India, Hong Kong, Australia, and mainland China also posted gains.
The session marked a significant improvement in investor sentiment, with all eight reported Asian indicators finishing higher. The rebound suggests investors were willing to return to equities after the previous day’s heavy losses, particularly in technology and semiconductor markets.
South Korea Leads Powerful Rebound
South Korea’s KOSPI Composite Index surged 5.89% to 6,852.58, recording the strongest gain among Asia’s major equity benchmarks.
The advance followed Wednesday’s 5.80% decline, allowing the index to recover much of the previous session’s losses. The rebound brought the KOSPI closer to the 7,000 level as investors returned to Korean technology and semiconductor stocks.
The sharp day-to-day swings highlight the elevated volatility that continues to characterize South Korea’s equity market.
Japan Recovers Above 66,000
Japan’s Nikkei 225 climbed 1.36% to 66,216.79, recovering after two consecutive sessions of significant declines.
The move pushed the index back above 66,000 as investors returned to technology, industrial, and export-oriented companies. Although the Nikkei remains below its recent highs, Thursday’s advance suggests some confidence has returned following the recent correction.
The recovery in Japan also helped strengthen the broader regional market tone.
India and Hong Kong Extend Gains
India’s S&P BSE Sensex rose 0.82% to 77,537.72, recovering after Wednesday’s 0.40% decline.
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index gained 0.80% to 25,698.49, moving further above the important 25,000 level and extending its relative resilience compared with mainland China.
The gains in both markets contributed to the broad-based recovery across Asia.
China and Australia Stabilize
China’s SSE Composite Index edged up 0.24% to 3,903.72, recovering modestly while remaining below the key 4,000 threshold.
Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 advanced 0.33% to 9,083.80, maintaining its position above 9,000 following recent volatility.
Although the gains were smaller than those recorded in South Korea and Japan, the positive finishes reinforced the breadth of Thursday’s regional recovery.
Currencies Strengthen Alongside Equities
Currency markets also moved higher during the session.
The Japanese Yen Index climbed 0.96% to 63.24, while the Australian Dollar Index gained 0.58% to 71.24.
The simultaneous strengthening of equities and currencies suggests investor sentiment improved broadly rather than being limited to a short-term rebound in stock markets.
Outlook
Looking ahead, investors will watch whether South Korea can extend its recovery toward the 7,000 level and whether Japan can sustain momentum above 66,000.
China’s ability to reclaim the 4,000 threshold will remain an important indicator of regional sentiment, while Hong Kong’s position above 25,000 and Australia’s ability to hold above 9,000 will also be closely monitored.
For now, Asia has staged a broad recovery after Wednesday’s sharp selloff, with every major reported equity benchmark finishing higher. The next sessions will determine whether Thursday’s gains represent the beginning of a sustained stabilization or another temporary rebound within a highly volatile August.
