Key Points
- Alibaba shares have risen 36% in Hong Kong this quarter, making the company one of the strongest performers among major Chinese technology stocks.
- The company's combination of AI models, cloud infrastructure, semiconductor development and applications is strengthening its position in China's rapidly expanding AI market.
- The upcoming earnings report will show whether accelerating revenue and cloud growth can begin to offset the substantial costs of Alibaba's continued AI investments.
Alibaba has emerged as one of the strongest performers among major Chinese technology stocks this quarter, with its Hong Kong-listed shares rising 36% ahead of its latest earnings report. The rally has allowed Alibaba to outperform the Hang Seng Tech Index and puts the company on track for its strongest quarterly performance relative to Tencent since early 2025.
The renewed investor interest reflects a significant change in Alibaba’s market narrative. The company was an early beneficiary of China’s artificial intelligence boom but subsequently lost attention as newer AI developers gained prominence through technological breakthroughs and high-profile listings. Alibaba’s recent resurgence has been supported by growing interest in its open-weight Qwen models and expectations that the company’s AI investments can generate meaningful commercial opportunities.
Cloud Computing Strengthens the Investment Case
Alibaba’s AI strategy extends beyond its foundation models. The company is investing across generative AI, cloud computing and semiconductor development, creating a broader technology ecosystem that could benefit as businesses increasingly adopt multiple AI models based on cost and performance.
Its cloud division is particularly important to the investment thesis. Omdia estimates that Alibaba held a 37% share of China’s cloud market in the fourth quarter of 2025, well ahead of Huawei at 17% and Tencent at 10%. The company is also developing its own chips while expanding AI applications ranging from the Qwen consumer platform to coding tools and enterprise agents.
This full-stack approach could become increasingly valuable as China’s AI market develops. Rather than relying exclusively on the success of one model, Alibaba can potentially monetize AI demand through computing infrastructure, software applications and enterprise services.
Earnings Could Determine Whether the AI Story Has Staying Power
Alibaba’s upcoming earnings report will provide an important test of whether its AI strategy is beginning to translate into stronger financial performance. Analysts expect revenue for the June quarter to increase 8.4%, which would represent the company’s fastest growth in almost three years. However, profitability is expected to decline as Alibaba continues making substantial investments across AI and other strategic businesses.
Cloud revenue and margins will therefore be among the most important indicators for investors. JPMorgan analyst Alex Yao has suggested that results could be better than feared if cloud growth accelerates, margins improve and losses associated with food delivery and quick-commerce operations narrow.
The market will ultimately need to determine whether Alibaba’s heavy AI spending is creating sustainable earnings power or simply increasing costs. Stronger cloud growth and continued adoption of Qwen could reinforce the company’s position as a leading Chinese AI platform, while weaker margins or slower commercialization could challenge the rally. Investors will also watch how Alibaba’s valuation compares with Tencent and other Chinese technology leaders as the AI investment cycle develops.
