Key Points
- FTSE 100 fell 0.3% for a sixth consecutive session, closing at 10,720.30 points and an over three-week low.
- Consumer-facing sectors declined sharply, while miners gained as gold strengthened and copper reached a more than six-month high.
- UK employment and inflation data this week could provide fresh signals on the Bank of England's interest-rate path.
London equities extended their recent decline on Monday as weakness across consumer-related sectors outweighed gains among mining companies. The FTSE 100 fell 0.3% to 10,720.30 points, marking its sixth consecutive daily decline, while the FTSE 250 dropped 0.7% as investors assessed domestic economic conditions alongside renewed geopolitical risks.
Consumer Stocks Lead the Market Lower
The FTSE 100’s decline was driven primarily by weakness in consumer-facing industries. The FTSE 350 personal goods, beverages, and personal care, drug and grocery store indexes fell between 1.9% and 2.7%, making them the market’s weakest sectors during the session.
The pressure comes against a backdrop of cautious UK business sentiment. A survey from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development showed that employers remained reluctant to hire, while business confidence stayed close to its weakest levels outside the COVID-19 pandemic. The combination points to a challenging domestic environment for companies exposed to household spending and employment conditions.
Miners Provide Some Support
Mining shares helped limit the broader FTSE 100 decline as precious and industrial metals strengthened. Gold prices firmed while copper reached a more than six-month high, supporting shares of major mining companies. Fresnillo gained 1.6%, Anglo American rose 2%, while Rio Tinto and Glencore also advanced.
Other individual stocks also provided support. AstraZeneca rose 0.9% after reporting that its Tagrisso-Orpathys combination and its Daiichi Sankyo-partnered Enhertu met key goals. Rolls-Royce climbed 1.5% after Morgan Stanley and Citigroup raised their price targets for the company.
Inflation and Middle East Risks Complicate Outlook
Geopolitical developments remained another source of uncertainty. U.S. President Donald Trump called on Iran to surrender to end the war, while an Iranian official warned that Tehran could escalate tensions around the Strait of Hormuz if diplomacy fails. Brent crude rose 0.5% to $89.02 per barrel, keeping energy markets firmly in focus.
Higher oil prices could complicate the UK’s inflation outlook if geopolitical tensions persist. Investors are therefore turning to employment data due Tuesday and inflation figures due Wednesday for indications of how the Bank of England may respond. Britain’s sovereign credit rating was maintained at AA- with a stable outlook by Fitch, providing some stability amid the broader uncertainty.
Markets will now focus on whether upcoming UK economic data confirms a moderating inflation environment or points to renewed price pressures, particularly if energy costs continue to rise. The combination of consumer weakness, geopolitical uncertainty and commodity-price movements is likely to remain central to the FTSE 100’s near-term direction, while the performance of miners could continue to provide an important counterweight if metals prices remain firm.
