Key Points
- PetMeds reported first-quarter net sales of $41.0 million, down 19.9% year over year, while management said revenue has stabilized sequentially.
- The company's net loss narrowed substantially to $6.1 million from $34.2 million, although adjusted EBITDA remained negative at $3.4 million.
- Customer acquisition costs declined 15%, general and administrative expenses fell nearly 14%, and the SAP ERP rollout and sale-leaseback transaction are supporting the company's broader turnaround strategy.
PetMed Express, Inc. (NASDAQ: PETS), operating as PetMeds and parent company of PetCareRx, reported first-quarter fiscal 2026 results showing continued pressure on revenue but meaningful improvement in its net loss. For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, net sales fell 19.9% year over year to $41.0 million, while the company emphasized sequential stabilization, tighter expense management and technology investments as it works to rebuild its financial performance.
Revenue Declines as Prescription Sales Remain Under Pressure
PetMeds generated $41.0 million in first-quarter net sales, compared with $51.2 million a year earlier. The decline was primarily attributed to weaker prescription medication sales, which more than offset lower consumer promotional usage. Although the year-over-year contraction remains significant, management highlighted that sales have stabilized sequentially over the past several quarters, suggesting that the deterioration may be moderating.
The company’s performance reflects the challenge of rebuilding demand while maintaining a more disciplined promotional strategy. Reducing reliance on consumer promotions can improve the quality of revenue, but it can also make near-term sales growth more difficult. Investors will therefore be watching whether stabilization develops into sustained revenue growth without requiring heavier promotional spending.
Loss Narrows Despite Continued Pressure on Profitability
PetMeds reported a net loss of $6.1 million, or $0.28 per diluted share, compared with a $34.2 million loss, or $1.65 per diluted share, in the prior-year quarter. The substantial improvement was primarily driven by the absence of the goodwill and trade name impairment charges recorded in the previous year, alongside lower general and administrative and advertising expenses.
However, the underlying profitability picture remains challenging. Adjusted EBITDA was negative $3.4 million, compared with negative $2.7 million a year earlier. Lower gross profit, primarily resulting from reduced manufacturer rebates as a percentage of sales, offset some of the benefits from lower net freight costs per order.
The contrast between the sharply narrower GAAP loss and slightly weaker adjusted EBITDA is important because it shows that the improvement was not entirely driven by stronger operating economics.
Marketing Efficiency and Technology Become Strategic Priorities
Management is increasingly focused on improving the efficiency of its customer acquisition model. PetMeds acquired 70,000 new customers during the quarter while reducing customer acquisition costs by 15% year over year. General and administrative expenses also declined by nearly 14%, demonstrating the company’s effort to align its cost structure with its current revenue base.
The company also completed an enterprise-wide rollout of its new SAP ERP system, marking a major milestone in its technology transformation. The new system is intended to strengthen financial systems and reporting processes, potentially giving management better visibility as it works to improve operational efficiency.
Balance Sheet and Market Outlook
PetMeds also pointed to its recently announced sale-leaseback transaction as an important step toward strengthening its balance sheet and improving financial flexibility. The additional flexibility could allow the company to direct capital toward initiatives considered most capable of improving shareholder returns.
Going forward, investors will likely focus on whether sequential sales stabilization can develop into renewed growth, while monitoring adjusted EBITDA, customer acquisition efficiency and cash resources. PetMeds remains in a turnaround phase, and the key opportunity lies in converting its cost reductions, technology investments and improved marketing efficiency into sustainable profitability. The central risk is that continued weakness in prescription sales could delay that transition despite progress on expenses and the balance sheet.
