Key Points

  • AI and hyperscaler companies are producing unusually large post-earnings stock moves, disrupting the traditional pattern in which smaller companies tend to experience greater volatility.
  • First-week options straddles generated an average 23% gain this earnings season, compared with an average 2% loss over the previous 12 quarters.
  • The unusually strong reactions highlight how closely markets are scrutinizing AI capital expenditure and whether massive spending is translating into measurable business returns.

The latest U.S. earnings season is challenging a long-standing pattern in equity markets, with AI companies and hyperscalers generating unusually large post-earnings stock swings. Data from options analytics provider ORATS shows that major technology companies are producing moves that have historically been more typical of smaller companies, reflecting the market’s heightened sensitivity to artificial intelligence spending and returns.

The shift is significant because mega-cap companies generally have deeper liquidity, larger floats and substantially greater institutional ownership, characteristics that typically moderate price reactions to corporate results. This earnings season, however, the scale of AI investment has made the financial results of the largest technology companies a major market event in their own right.

AI Spending Is Driving Larger Earnings Reactions

Companies including Amazon, Microsoft, Google and Meta have recorded significant post-earnings stock movements as investors assess whether their rapidly increasing AI capital expenditures are producing sufficient commercial returns. The market response has varied depending on how investors interpret the relationship between infrastructure spending, revenue growth and future profitability.

That dynamic is changing the risk profile surrounding earnings announcements for some of the world’s largest companies. Rather than treating mega-cap technology results as relatively stable events, investors are increasingly responding to forward guidance, AI spending plans and evidence of monetization with substantial changes in valuation.

Options Market Shows an Unusual Earnings Pattern

ORATS data provides a quantitative indication of the shift. For companies reporting during the first week of the second-quarter earnings season, buying options straddles produced an average gain of 23%. A straddle combines the purchase of a put option and a call option and is designed to benefit from sufficiently large price movements in either direction.

The result contrasts sharply with the historical performance of the same strategy. Over the previous 12 quarters, first-week straddles generated an average loss of 2%. By comparison, the strategy produced an average loss of 6% during the fourth week of the current earnings season, versus a historical average loss of 5%.

The data suggests that the market has been pricing and experiencing substantially greater volatility around the results of early-reporting technology leaders than historical patterns would imply.

Why Mega-Cap Technology Now Matters More

Earnings seasons traditionally begin with major financial institutions, Dow Jones companies and mega-cap technology groups before attention shifts toward smaller companies. Smaller stocks have historically generated larger earnings reactions because they generally have thinner liquidity, smaller floats, less institutional ownership and fewer analysts covering them.

This season has been different. AI hyperscalers have effectively become volatility drivers, with their earnings reports providing investors with information about the broader economics of the AI infrastructure cycle. Their results can influence not only individual valuations but also expectations for semiconductor demand, data-center investment and the technology sector more broadly.

Looking ahead, investors will be watching whether the unusually large earnings reactions persist as more companies report results and provide updated AI spending plans. Capital expenditure growth, AI-related revenue, margins and evidence of returns on infrastructure investment will remain critical variables. If companies demonstrate stronger monetization, market volatility around AI earnings could remain elevated as investors reassess valuations; if spending continues to rise without comparable financial returns, the same sensitivity could amplify downside reactions.
