Key Points
- GE Aerospace continues to benefit from robust demand in both commercial aviation and defense, supported by strong engine orders, expanding aftermarket services, and improving production efficiency.
- Northrop Grumman maintains a substantial defense backlog and is well positioned to benefit from rising U.S. and international defense spending, although elevated debt and supply chain challenges remain concerns.
- While Northrop offers a more attractive valuation, GE Aerospace's stronger earnings growth, improving operational performance, and shareholder returns make it the more compelling investment at present.
GE Aerospace Continues to Build Momentum
GE Aerospace has strengthened its position across both commercial and defense aviation as global air travel recovers and military spending continues to expand.
The company’s Commercial Engines & Services division has experienced strong demand for its LEAP, GEnx, and GE9X engines, supported by airline fleet modernization and increased aircraft utilization. During the first half of 2026, GE secured major engine orders from United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, Copa Airlines, and Ryanair, reinforcing its leadership in commercial propulsion systems.
Operational improvements under the company’s FLIGHT DECK lean manufacturing initiative have also enhanced production efficiency. In the second quarter, commercial engine deliveries increased 26% year over year, while segment revenue and orders rose 27% and 18%, respectively.
Defense Business Provides Additional Growth
GE’s defense operations continue to expand through demand for military propulsion systems, additive manufacturing technologies, and aftermarket services.
Recent contract wins include continued integration of the F404 engine into Türkiye’s Hurjet trainer aircraft and a $1.4 billion agreement to supply T408 engines for the U.S. Marine Corps’ CH-53K heavy-lift helicopter fleet.
The Defense & Propulsion Technologies segment posted 16% revenue growth and 12% order growth during the second quarter, demonstrating continued strength across military programs.
Northrop Grumman Benefits from Strong Defense Spending
Northrop Grumman remains one of the largest beneficiaries of expanding global defense budgets.
The company ended the second quarter with a record backlog of approximately $104.7 billion, providing substantial long-term revenue visibility. Since roughly 84% of its 2025 sales were generated from the U.S. government, continued defense funding from Washington remains a significant catalyst.
International demand also continues to expand, particularly across Europe and the Middle East, where growing security concerns are driving interest in Northrop’s Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS) and other advanced defense technologies.
International sales reached approximately $1.54 billion during the second quarter, representing 14% of total revenue.
Shareholder Returns Remain a Priority
Both companies continue returning capital to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases.
During the first six months of 2026, GE Aerospace returned approximately $873 million through dividends and increased its quarterly dividend by more than 30%. The company also repurchased $4.2 billion of its own shares.
Northrop Grumman distributed approximately $684 million in dividends while raising its quarterly dividend by nearly 7%. Share repurchases totaled $68 million during the same period.
Financial Strength Favors GE
One area where the two companies differ significantly is balance sheet strength.
Northrop Grumman continues to carry approximately $14.4 billion in long-term debt, while holding only about $2.3 billion in cash and cash equivalents. Although manageable, the leverage reduces financial flexibility compared with GE Aerospace.
GE’s stronger liquidity position provides greater flexibility to invest in growth initiatives while maintaining generous shareholder return programs.
Growth Outlook Supports GE
Analyst expectations continue to favor GE Aerospace.
Consensus estimates project 2026 revenue growth of approximately 19.7% alongside 23.4% earnings-per-share growth, with earnings estimates continuing to move higher in recent months.
Northrop Grumman is expected to generate more modest growth, with projected 2026 revenue increasing 4.9% and earnings rising approximately 9.5%.
While Northrop trades at a substantially lower forward valuation, GE’s stronger earnings trajectory helps justify its premium multiple.
Outlook
Both GE Aerospace and Northrop Grumman remain well positioned to benefit from favorable long-term trends in aerospace and defense. Northrop offers stable exposure to rising defense spending and a sizable contract backlog, making it an attractive option for investors seeking a traditional defense contractor. However, GE Aerospace combines accelerating commercial aviation demand, expanding defense opportunities, improving manufacturing efficiency, and stronger projected earnings growth. Although its shares command a higher valuation, GE currently appears better positioned to deliver superior long-term growth, making it the stronger investment opportunity among the two aerospace leaders.
