Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) reported record quarterly revenue and earnings that surpassed Wall Street expectations, but investors focused instead on softer-than-expected guidance and ongoing supply chain pressures, sending the company’s shares lower in after-hours trading.

The earnings report marked the final quarterly results presented by Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook before leadership transitions to longtime hardware executive John Ternus on September 1.

Record Revenue Tops Expectations

Apple generated $109.42 billion in revenue during the April-to-June quarter, representing 16% year-over-year growth and exceeding analyst expectations of approximately $109 billion.

Net income increased 27% to $29.79 billion, or $2.02 per diluted share, compared with $23.43 billion, or $1.57 per share, during the same period last year.

Analysts had forecast earnings of approximately $1.89 per share, making the quarter another earnings beat for the technology giant.

Management noted that tariff refunds contributed approximately $0.11 per share to quarterly earnings.

iPhone, Mac and Services Drive Growth

Apple reported double-digit revenue growth across its iPhone, Mac, and Services businesses, with every geographic region contributing to the company’s strongest June quarter on record.

CEO Tim Cook credited broad-based customer demand and the continued strength of Apple’s ecosystem for the company’s solid financial performance.

The results demonstrated Apple’s ability to sustain revenue growth despite a challenging consumer electronics environment and ongoing supply chain disruptions.

Outlook Disappoints Investors

Despite reporting record financial results, Apple forecast revenue growth of 9% to 11% for the current quarter.

The guidance fell below analyst expectations of approximately 12%, prompting investors to reassess near-term growth prospects.

The weaker outlook overshadowed the company’s strong quarterly performance and contributed to a sharp decline in Apple shares during after-hours trading.

Rising Memory Costs Pressure Margins

Apple warned that higher memory prices and shortages of advanced semiconductor manufacturing capacity continue to create headwinds for the business.

Management attributed much of the pressure to the global artificial intelligence boom, which has intensified demand for advanced memory components and chip production capacity across the technology industry.

Cook described the surge in memory costs as a “100-year flood,” indicating that the company expects component expenses to continue rising during the current quarter.

The company has already increased prices on selected Mac and iPad models to offset higher costs, while analysts expect iPhone pricing adjustments could follow later this year if supply constraints persist.

AI Spending Strategy Remains Different

Unlike many of its largest technology peers, Apple continues to avoid the massive capital expenditures currently being directed toward artificial intelligence infrastructure.

While companies such as Microsoft, Alphabet, Meta Platforms, and Amazon continue investing heavily in AI data centers and computing capacity, Apple has maintained a more disciplined spending profile, allowing it to generate strong free cash flow.

However, the company remains indirectly affected by the AI boom through higher semiconductor and memory prices.

Leadership Transition Begins

The earnings report also marked an important milestone in Apple’s leadership history.

After serving as chief executive for 15 years, Tim Cook will step down on September 1, with Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering John Ternus assuming the CEO role.

Cook expressed confidence in Apple’s executive team and the company’s long-term direction as leadership transitions to its next generation.

Outlook

Apple continues to demonstrate strong financial performance through resilient demand for its core products and expanding services revenue. However, investors remain focused on slowing revenue growth expectations, rising semiconductor costs, and continued supply constraints affecting the broader consumer electronics industry. As John Ternus prepares to lead Apple into its next chapter, markets will closely monitor how the company manages component inflation while sustaining product innovation and profitability.
