Key Points
- IBM maintained most of its 2026 outlook despite lowering its revenue growth forecast, betting that demand for mainframe computing will rebound in the coming months.
- Second-quarter results met revised expectations, but management acknowledged that customers continue prioritizing investments in AI infrastructure over traditional computing platforms.
- Investors remain focused on whether IBM can deliver the anticipated recovery in mainframe sales and restore confidence following its unexpected revenue warning.
IBM is seeking to reassure investors that a temporary slowdown in its mainframe business will give way to renewed growth, even as enterprises continue directing larger portions of their technology budgets toward artificial intelligence infrastructure. The company maintained a relatively optimistic full-year outlook despite issuing a sales warning earlier this month, signaling confidence that demand for its flagship computing systems will strengthen during the second half of the year.
The outlook comes at a pivotal time for IBM as the technology industry undergoes one of its largest infrastructure shifts in decades, with AI servers, accelerators, and cloud computing attracting unprecedented investment.
Mainframe Slowdown Offsets Stable Quarterly Performance
IBM reported second-quarter revenue of $17.2 billion, broadly matching analysts’ revised expectations, while diluted earnings per share reached $2.93, also in line with consensus estimates.
Although the quarterly results met market forecasts, they followed a pre-announced revenue warning that significantly lowered investor expectations. Earlier this month, IBM disclosed that revenue would fall short of prior projections, prompting analysts to reduce earnings estimates for both 2026 and 2027.
Management also modestly reduced its full-year outlook, now forecasting constant-currency revenue growth of 4% to 5%, compared with its previous expectation of more than 5%.
AI Investment Shift Pressures Traditional Infrastructure
According to IBM executives, enterprise customers have increasingly prioritized spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure, including AI servers, chips, and data center expansion. That shift has temporarily slowed purchasing decisions for traditional mainframe systems.
Despite the near-term weakness, Chief Financial Officer Jim Kavanaugh said IBM continues to see strong long-term demand for mainframe computing. He noted there is no evidence that customers are abandoning the platform, emphasizing continued capacity growth and the increasing role of AI inference workloads running on enterprise infrastructure.
Management believes the economics of integrating AI capabilities with existing mainframe environments will become increasingly attractive, supporting a recovery in customer demand over the coming quarters.
Investor Confidence Hinges on Execution
IBM’s strategy now depends on demonstrating that the current slowdown represents a temporary shift in customer spending rather than a structural decline in its mainframe franchise.
While artificial intelligence remains the dominant investment theme across enterprise technology, IBM argues that AI adoption will ultimately complement rather than replace mission-critical mainframe systems. The company expects organizations to continue relying on its infrastructure for secure, high-volume transaction processing while integrating new AI capabilities.
Investors, however, remain cautious. Analysts have reduced earnings forecasts following the company’s warning, and market participants are expected to seek evidence throughout the second half of the year that mainframe demand is recovering as management anticipates.
Looking ahead, IBM’s ability to restore investor confidence will depend on whether enterprise customers resume mainframe purchases while continuing to adopt AI technologies. If management can demonstrate that AI investment drives additional demand for IBM’s hybrid infrastructure strategy rather than displacing it, the company could strengthen its competitive position in the evolving enterprise technology landscape. Until then, investors are likely to remain focused on execution, revenue visibility, and signs that the expected recovery is beginning to materialize.
