IBM delivered second-quarter results that matched Wall Street’s revised expectations, but the technology giant continues to face growing pressure to demonstrate that its artificial intelligence strategy can translate into stronger business growth. Although the company’s shares moved higher following the earnings release, management’s reduced revenue outlook and slowing performance across several business segments suggest investors remain focused on execution rather than long-term vision.

The results come after IBM issued a disappointing preliminary earnings update earlier this month, significantly lowering market expectations ahead of the official report.

IBM Meets Reduced Expectations but Lowers Annual Outlook

IBM reported second-quarter revenue of $17.2 billion, representing 1% year-over-year growth and matching analyst expectations following the company’s earlier earnings warning. Diluted earnings per share also met consensus estimates at $2.93.

While the results avoided another negative surprise, management revised its full-year guidance, now expecting constant-currency revenue growth between 4% and 5%, compared with its previous forecast of more than 5%.

The revised outlook reflects continued challenges across several of IBM’s core businesses. Infrastructure revenue declined 7% during the quarter, consulting revenue remained flat, and software revenue growth slowed to 5% from 11% in the previous quarter, indicating that demand remains uneven despite strong interest in enterprise AI solutions.

Leadership Reaffirms AI Strategy Despite Execution Challenges

During the earnings call, Chief Executive Officer Arvind Krishna acknowledged that IBM’s strategy remains sound but admitted the company fell short operationally during the second quarter.

Management continues to position IBM around three major technology pillars: hybrid cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing. Krishna emphasized that these businesses complement one another and support IBM’s long-term competitive positioning in enterprise technology.

Chief Financial Officer Jim Kavanaugh also attributed some recent weakness to customers prioritizing infrastructure investments required to support future AI deployments. According to management, enterprises continue allocating significant capital toward AI infrastructure, even as broader technology spending patterns remain uneven.

IBM also dismissed speculation that it could separate parts of its business, reiterating that its integrated model combining software, consulting, infrastructure, and ecosystem services provides greater long-term value than operating as independent companies.

Investor Confidence Still Requires Consistent Improvement

Although IBM shares gained following the earnings release, the company’s turnaround remains under close scrutiny. Wall Street analysts have reduced earnings expectations for future years following the earlier guidance revision, reflecting increased caution regarding IBM’s near-term growth trajectory.

Investors are increasingly focused on whether IBM can convert its artificial intelligence initiatives into accelerating revenue growth while stabilizing its traditional infrastructure and consulting operations. Enterprise AI adoption continues expanding, but competition remains intense from both established technology companies and newer cloud-focused providers.

The company also faces the challenge of demonstrating that investments in AI and quantum computing will eventually generate stronger financial returns rather than simply supporting long-term strategic positioning.

Looking ahead, IBM’s success will likely depend on its ability to execute consistently across its core business segments while capitalizing on growing enterprise demand for AI solutions. Investors will be watching upcoming quarters closely for evidence that software growth reaccelerates, consulting activity improves, and AI investments begin contributing more meaningfully to revenue expansion. Until then, IBM is likely to remain a stock that requires continued operational proof before regaining broader investor confidence.
