Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) has announced plans to invest more than €1 billion in Spain between 2025 and 2028, reinforcing its long-term commitment to the Spanish audiovisual industry. The announcement was made by co-CEO Ted Sarandos during a high-profile event at Netflix’s production hub in Tres Cantos, Madrid — the company’s largest production facility in the European Union.
Celebrating a Decade in Spain: A Streaming Success Story
This major investment coincides with Netflix’s 10th anniversary in Spain, marking a decade of rapid expansion and deep collaboration with local creators. Since 2017, Netflix has produced over 1,000 Spanish-language titles, including series, films, and documentaries that have captivated audiences worldwide.
Notable productions include Cable Girls (Las Chicas del Cable), Netflix’s first original Spanish series filmed in Madrid, The Snow Girl shot in Andalusia, Nowhere on the beaches of Sitges, and All the Truth Behind My Lies, currently in production in Murcia. In total, Netflix has filmed in more than 200 cities and towns across every autonomous community in Spain.
A Billion-Euro Strategic Investment
Speaking in front of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Minister for Digital Transformation Óscar López, Sarandos unveiled the company’s plan to invest over €1 billion in Spain over the next four years. The capital will be allocated to new productions, talent development, industry training, and infrastructure upgrades — including further expansion of the state-of-the-art Tres Cantos studio.
Opened in 2019, the Tres Cantos facility spans 22,000 square meters, with 10 sound stages, advanced post-production capabilities, and a seamless workflow environment for top-tier creators. It has served as the production site for award-winning titles such as Society of the Snow by J.A. Bayona (which won 12 Goya Awards), Elite by Carlos Montero — Netflix’s longest-running Spanish and international series — and La Casa de Papel, Berlin, and Billionaires’ Bunker from Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato.
Driving Global Reach Through Local Stories
According to Sarandos, Spanish content generated over 5 billion hours of global viewing on Netflix in 2024 alone. Iconic visuals such as red jumpsuits and Dali masks have become part of global pop culture. Yet the success of these productions stems from their authentic, local roots — created by Spanish writers, directors, producers, cast, and crews, and designed primarily for Spanish audiences.
“These stories work because they are, at their core, Spanish,” said Sarandos. “They are made in Spain, for Spain, by Spain — and they resonate globally.”
Favorable Policy Environment Fuels Growth
Sarandos praised the Spanish government for fostering a business environment that encourages creativity, innovation, and long-term investment. Spain’s regulatory landscape has positioned the country as an attractive destination for global media firms looking to expand their production capacity and reach.
“Spain is not just culturally rich and creatively vibrant — it’s also a great place to do business,” Sarandos noted, emphasizing the country’s stable framework for audiovisual development.
Looking Ahead: Strengthening Spain’s Role as a Global Production Powerhouse
Netflix’s billion-euro commitment signals a broader strategic intent: to make Spain a central hub for European — and even global — content development. The company plans to increase its support for local creators, expand training programs for young professionals, and roll out new projects that spotlight the diversity and richness of Spanish culture.
“This investment will create more Spanish jobs, generate economic growth, and empower the next generation of storytellers,” Sarandos stated. “We’re proud to deepen our roots here.”
Conclusion: Spain Rises as a Creative and Economic Engine for Netflix
Netflix’s announcement not only underscores its strategic commitment to Spain but also positions the country as a key player in the global streaming landscape. The €1 billion investment will enhance Netflix’s production capabilities, promote cultural exchange, and accelerate Spain’s evolution into a creative powerhouse.
As competition intensifies in the global content arena, Netflix’s localized investment model — rooted in high-quality, authentic storytelling — could serve as a blueprint for other markets. With the backing of government policy, a thriving creative ecosystem, and growing global demand, Spain is well-poised to lead the next wave of international content production.
