The modest response underscores the structural and consumer challenges Tesla faces as it seeks to establish a foothold in India’s still-nascent electric vehicle (EV) industry.

Tariffs and Pricing Challenges

Tesla’s Model Y, introduced in India at a price point of around $70,000, has been met with skepticism in a market where affordability drives mass adoption. India’s steep import tariffs on vehicles—among the highest globally—inflate costs, effectively placing Tesla’s offering in the luxury category.
