Meta has acquired AI-wearables startup Limitless, marking one of its most significant steps yet toward building a suite of AI-enabled consumer devices that extend far beyond traditional social platforms. The deal reflects Meta’s accelerating pivot toward hardware that blends artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and personal productivity — a strategic path the company has sharpened in recent months as competition for next-generation consumer technology intensifies.

Limitless, formerly known as Rewind, has gained attention for its pendant-style device that clips onto clothing and records real-world conversations before converting them into transcripts and searchable summaries. The startup’s co-founder and CEO Dan Siroker announced the acquisition in a blog post, aligning Limitless’ mission with Meta’s newly unveiled ambition to deliver “personal superintelligence” through AI-infused devices. Although financial terms were not disclosed, the acquisition signals a deepening commitment from Meta to dominate an emerging category of AI wearables.

Meta Expands Its AI Hardware Vision

Meta’s move builds on its existing partnerships with Ray-Ban and Oakley through EssilorLuxottica, which have already brought AI-powered smart glasses to market. These efforts have aimed to integrate conversational AI, real-time assistance, and hands-free functionality into everyday accessories. By adding Limitless’ technology, Meta gains a product capable of capturing and organizing real-world interactions — a tool that could become foundational for more advanced wearable AI.

The acquisition comes just days after Meta recruited longtime Apple design executive Alan Dye, a hire that many in Silicon Valley view as a signal of Meta’s intention to elevate the sophistication and market appeal of its hardware portfolio. With Limitless’ engineering talent and software infrastructure, Meta can significantly accelerate its development cycles on devices that could compete directly with the likes of Humane’s AI Pin, Rabbit’s AI device, and future Apple wearables.

A Meta spokesperson said the company is “excited that Limitless will be joining Meta to help accelerate our work to build AI-enabled wearables,” underscoring how central personal hardware has become to the firm’s next strategic phase.

A Growing Market for AI Memory and Productivity Tools

Limitless’ product sits within a rapidly emerging market for AI companions designed to enhance memory, productivity, and contextual intelligence. The device’s ability to record conversations and instantly transcribe and summarize them offers a glimpse into how AI might augment daily life. For Meta, integrating such capabilities into broader ecosystems — including glasses, AR devices, and potentially future wearable forms — opens pathways to create a suite of seamless, always-on AI assistants.

However, the device also raises notable privacy questions. Limitless confirmed it will continue supporting existing customers but will stop selling new units. Current users must accept revised privacy terms to maintain service, a move likely influenced by Meta’s larger regulatory and reputational challenges around data governance.

Limitless had raised over $33 million from prominent investors, including Sam Altman and Andreessen Horowitz (A16z), highlighting the elevated interest in AI wearables among Silicon Valley leaders.

Outlook: A Pivotal Acquisition in a Fast-Evolving AI Hardware Landscape

Meta’s acquisition of Limitless could prove transformative as the company expands its footprint in consumer hardware designed around AI-first interactions rather than screens or apps. The ability to capture, store, and intelligently process real-world context is central to the future of ambient computing — and Meta appears determined to lead that shift.

Investors and regulators will watch closely as Meta integrates Limitless’ technology, particularly how the company addresses privacy safeguards while pursuing increasingly powerful AI-enabled devices. As the broader AI wearables market matures, this acquisition positions Meta at the front of a competitive race that includes Apple, OpenAI-affiliated startups, and a growing wave of hardware-focused AI innovators.
